Rohan Kanawde’s Sabar Bonda wins top prize at Sundance Film Festival 2025

It is the only Indian film to premiere at the festival

Marathi filmmaker Rohan Parshuram Kanawade’s Sabar Bonda (Cactus Pears) has won the top honor at Sundance Film Festival 2025. It bagged the Grand Jury Prize in World Cinema Dramatic Competition and was the only Indian film to premiere at festival this year. It is a co-production between India, United Kingdom and Canada and has actor Jim Sarbh as one of its co-producers.

The film stars Bhushaan Manoj and Suraaj Suman and tells the story Anand (Bhushaan) who is forced to return to his ancestral village in rural Maharashtra for a 10-day mourning period. During this time, he rekindles his friendship with his childhood friend, who is now a farmer and has to decide the fate of their relationship moving ahead.

It was also the first Marathi film to be screened at Sundance.

Jim Sarbh took to Instagram to share a team picture after the award ceremony. He wrote in the caption, “We won,” and noted down the credits of the film.

The film is written by Rohan and shot by Vikas Urs.
